Curated links, tools, research and interviews for October.
Welcome to the 15th issue of Nuanced Narratives.
Happy halloween! This month I've ventured into a new format: case studies. This will replace the interviews I've been conducting as an even better format to unearth valuable insights and ideas.
I'm very grateful to Yizhe Ang for taking the time to set up the very first case study with me, he meticulously prepared a step-by-step behind the scenes to explain his process, tools and challenges working on Sleepless in Singapore.
The first three case studies will be publicly available, beyond that only signed-in members will have access.
Inspiration
This month's award goes to team at Highline for The 21st Century Gold Rush, the interactive documentary reporting about the individuals profiting the most from the refugee crisis. A massive undertaking packaged in an incredibly immersive experience.
The special mention goes to Neal Agarwal for his latest work, Internet Artifacts. In what must have been a gargantuan task, Neal has built an interactive museum for the internet. That AOL dial-up brought me way, way back.
Insights
After over a decade following ARTE Interactive's work as a benchmark for cultural experiences, I was thrilled to interview Lili Blumers earlier this month.
Lili is a commissioning editor who's been working with ARTE for years, in our talk she explains ARTE's editorial pillars for incoming projects, their approach to support European creators and the recurring best practices across different formats.
You can read a summary of the takeaways or watch the highlights here.
The next member talk will take place in December with Tim Clark, discussing design for spatial journalism before the release of Apple Vision Pro in January.
Tim worked as creative lead for the New York Times, contributing to the R&D team’s experiments into open world journalism.
